Terex Utilities Gears Up To Distribute Industry’s First All-Electric Bucket Truck
Terex Utilities has unveiled the Optima 55 eMV, the industry’s first electric bucket truck on a Class 6/7 medium-duty chassis.
The truck made its debut in early June at the Electric Utility Fleet Managers Conference, held in Williamsburg, Virginia.
During this conference, the company also announced the first nine customers from across the US and Canada that will receive the new 55 ft electric Terex Optima aerial devices.
Accelerating Electrification
Terex has taken its Optima 55 ft aerial device, powered by the HyPowerTM SmartPTO by Viatec, and made it available on an International eMV Series battery electric 33,000 GVW chassis, from Navistar.
“By combining SmartPTO technology with the International electric chassis, Terex Utilities was able to bring this bucket truck solution to the electric utilities two years ahead of industry projections,” said Joe Caywood, director of marketing at Terex Utilities. “We are giving electric utilities a solution now to help meet their electrification and sustainability goals. Many utilities have sustainability goals with 50% electric achievement by 2025 and 100% electric by 2030. This solution can accelerate plans for electrification of their fleets.”
The Terex Optima 55 ft aerial, mounted on the International eMV Series, is a 60 ft working height aerial that can be used for electric distribution line work. It has a 135-mile driving range and the ability to operate the bucket for a full workday on a single charge.
“We have been working on green solutions for more than a decade,” said Caywood. “During that time, we have learned what works and what doesn’t. It’s exciting to see these investments come to fruition with an all-electric bucket truck that is robust and designed to meet the specific needs of utility applications.”
Coming To America
Terex Utilities has announced the first nine customers who will receive these new Terex Optima 55 ft aerial devices, powered by the HyPowerTM SmartPTO by Viatec and mounted on an International Class 6/7 Medium Duty electric chassis.
“Xcel Energy, which provides power to millions of homes and businesses across eight Western and Midwestern states, will take delivery of the first unit later this month,” said Joe Caywood, Director of Marketing and Product Management. “Many utilities are anxious to jump start their progress toward achieving sustainable fleets. The response from the market has been immediate, with Xcel Energy committing to the first.”

With a 135-mile (217 km) driving range and the ability to operate the bucket for a full workday on a single charge, the electric Terex Optima 55 with the International eMV Series truck is ideal for electric distribution line work, while making zero emissions at job site a reality.

Nine utility organizations of all sizes, representing investor-owned and municipal utilities, from across the US and Canada, made early commitments with orders prior to the Electric Utility Fleet Managers Conference.
Receiving units, along with Xcel Energy, will be Oncor Electric Company, Central Hudson Gas & Electric, CenterPoint Energy, PNM Resources, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Con Edison, San Diego Gas & Electric, and SaskPower.
According to Terex Utilities, the first 10 units will be delivered in 2022.
